The Amnesty International Page

Founded in 1961, Amnesty International is the grandfather of human rights organizations around the world. Its history is to a large extent the history of the movement, although it is only one of many such groups today. For a short description of each item, select the bullet. To go directly to the page, select the title.

Introductory "Brochure" and Information about Joining

This is an introductory brochure about Amnesty International which contains information about joining the organization. It was written and released by AIUSA, the United States national section, but the information applies to Amnesty as a whole.

The London Observer, Appeal for Amnesty 1961

The article that started it all. This is an HTML reproduction of the original article titled, "THE FORGOTTEN PRISONERS: Appeal for Amnesty 1961", published in the London Observer Sunday Edition on May 28, 1961, which started Amnesty International.

The Amnesty International Fact Sheet

This list of pertinent facts about Amnesty International was written by the International Secretariat, AI's administrative head office in London, and released in December 1993. It gives a pretty good picture of what the organization is about and what it does. You can also retrieve a brief text file of organization statistics for 1993.

The Statute of Amnesty International (The "Mandate")

This document is Amnesty International's charter. It describes basic concerns, reasons for existence, and the general rules by which it operates. If you have ever been around AI people and heard them debate whether a particular concern or action was "within the mandate", here's your chance to see what they were talking about. <grin>

The Urgent Action Network (UAN)

This is a description of what is, in my opinion, one of Amnesty's most important areas of work. The UAN issues "calls to action" in cases where a person's life is in danger, someone has "disappeared", someone is being tortured or torture is suspected or feared, a prisoner of conscience or political prisoner has a serious health condition that is not being treated properly or cannot be treated properly in prison, or some other situation requires immediate action.

How to Contact the UAN Around the World

Urgent Action reports are available from the following email addresses, which can also tell you how to join the Urgent Action Network:

If you live outside the countries listed above, you may contact your national section, if one exists, or write to the International Secretariat, AI's main international office, directly to find out how Urgent Action appeals are distributed in your country.

AI Special Letter Writing Networks

A description of a number of Amnesty International special networks focusing on medical, legal, or other categories of human rights abuses.

How to Get in Touch With Amnesty International Around the World

This is a list of Amnesty International offices and contact people around the world. It includes the International Secretariat, AI's central office, all the National Sections, and a number of regional offices and special issue offices for several National Sections. Where I have that information, it also provides links to lists of Local Groups and contacts within specific National Sections.

Other Amnesty International WWW Sites

Other WWW sites by various offices and volunteer groups, including home pages for Amnesty Local Groups and Campus Groups around the world.

Amnesty International Printed Reports and Documentation

This is a list of all documents, such as country reports, the Annual Report, and reports on regions or issues, which are publicly available from Amnesty International, with prices and ordering information.
